ALICE GARIK
ARTIST STATEMENT
“…for our task is to stamp this provisional, perishing earth into ourselves so deeply, so painfully and passionately, that its being may rise again, ‘invisibly’, in us.”
Rainer Maria Rilke
I see my art as advocacy for our intersection with nature. I place images together so a story emerges. Working with large format cameras gives me negatives that render my subjects with little to no grain thus providing full rendition of texture and light.
As I develop these images in silver gelatin or palladium I realize the thrill of being on this Earth—the changes in light season to season, the particularities of every animal, every tree—the awe of it all.”
Alice Garik’s artwork is in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum, the Polaroid Collection, and The Center for Photography at Woodstock.
She has twice received a grant from the Polaroid Corporation and has done commissioned artwork for Bergdorf Goodman, Orion Magazine, and Dance Ink. Additionally, her art has been used on several book covers.
