Babies Meet the Cherry Blossoms at The Brooklyn Botanic Garden Part 1

Last weekend with the spring weather taking a detour to summer, the cherry blossoms opened at The Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Each year this is anticipated with wonder. These children who I photographed on Friday were introduced to the blossoming cherry trees for the first time in their lives. Their excitement was about exploring the trees [...]

International Women’s Day

Today is International Women’s Day. With this I am drawn back to an event a few weeks ago sponsored by the New Space For Women’s Health. It was a talk with midwife Carol Leonard who read sections of her wonderful book “Lady’s Hands, Lion’s Heart”. For me it emphasized the power of sharing our own [...]

Snow

We have been experiencing cold this winter. Many of us are having trouble dressing for and being outside in it. When I think of snow I am drawn to its beauty and yes, our abilities to experience it. Whether in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, where the swans manage with the snow and ice, or in Vermont [...]

Seasons, Sustenance and Survival

Changing seasons can seem subtle like the freezing and flooding of the harvested cornfields. The beauty of these cornfields change with the weather and the light of the day. Harvest time is also about the hunt giving families meat for the winter.

Honorable Mention

One of my children portraits has been given an Honorable Mention in the Px3 Photo Competition for one of my child portraits. I have continued to photograph his growing family: a new brother and new goats on the way. Here are some photos.

Simple Can Be So Elegant

Sometimes the spare can be just the beauty we need. Dana Barrow, the florist, who recently did the flowers for a wedding at Castle Hilll demonstrated her superb skill with her arrangements. Such arrangements can only be done by someone with knowledge and appreciation of plants and nature. Dana has written that these photos of [...]

Fun and Joy

At Kate and Tom’s wedding the downpour of rain couldn’t dampen their spirits and that of their friends and families. Such joy was expressed throughout the day and night of fun and dance. Their colorful flowers were done by Berthe Cowles. Here are a very few photographs.

New Beginnings

There is for me in the process and event of a wedding a profound awakening. Every bride and groom I have encountered feels that they are entering a new life. With this advent comes a sensitivity to the world around them and a welcoming. New experiences beckon. These photos are few but I hope capture [...]

Swans That Are Close To Us

In Prospect Park live a pair of swans that I have been observing and photographing for a few years. They have raised their young in the park and I have been fortunate to see these cygnets mature. This year they had three cygnets, but all seem to have disappeared and/or died. I write this because [...]

Ornithology Exhibit

I have a passion for photographing birds, particularly swans and hawks. An exhibit in NYC titled “Ornithology”, www.jenbekman.com/shows/ornithology has work of other artists, both photographers and painters. Here are two recent pieces that I have done in platinum palladium.
